About the EEU

Our School Values

In 2024, our staff gathered to discuss the values that make our school work. Rather than rules or expectations that only applied to the children, we know that to create a truly inclusive community, we must all be accountable to each other. By having school-wide values, we can work together, model, practice, and learn as a group.

The Experimental Education Unit (EEU), part of the Haring Center for Inclusive Education at the University of Washington’s Seattle campus, is an early childhood school community where children and adults learn and grow together. Rooted in the belief that we value everyone, the EEU offers inclusive education to children with and without disabilities, creating an environment where diversity is embraced and every child is supported.

Our classrooms bring together a dynamic team of professionals, including head teachers, instructional assistants, speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, nurses, and more, who collaborate to provide individualized educational and therapeutic support. These teams embody the value of continuing to learn, but teaching each other, future generations of therapists and educators, and children.

The EEU’s programs are designed to support the development of each child’s cognitive, motor, communication, and social skills using a multitude of methods. Through hands-on learning and inclusive practices, non-disabled and disabled children grow in a shared community of learners. The range and diversity of learners create classrooms where everyone works together to support one another.

As part of a research-based institution, the EEU blends direct service, ongoing research, and real-world training for university students and professionals. This ensures our commitment to every child and adult remains strong, and reflects our belief that we keep learning, constantly refining our practices to better support every child’s journey from infancy through kindergarten and beyond.
